Katia Bulbenko is an illustrator, painter and surface pattern designer based in Weehawken, NJ, a small town on the Hudson River near New York City, where she lives with her husband and piebald polydactyl cat, Cowgirl.
She has been drawing since she could hold a pencil, and now creates illustrations for greeting cards, books, magazines and puzzles, as well as pattern designs for fabric and home goods, finding inspiration in nature and the urban environment of everyday life.
Illustrated recipes are a specialty, and they are an opportunity to combine images of everyday kitchen objects and ingredients with hand lettering. Katia enjoys gardening and collecting vintage pottery, jewelry and seashells, which are featured often in her work.
After receiving a BFA in Printmaking at Tyler School of Art, Katia turned her love of print and pattern to textile design, painting on silk for the women’s apparel industry in New York, creating florals and fun “conversational” themes like coffee cups, donuts, dogs, etc. for pajamas. Working in the gutta serti silk painting technique, as well as with gouache on paper, Katia gained valuable experience that propelled her to learn digital processes in Procreate, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Her current collection of fabrics, wallpaper and home textiles is available in her Spoonflower shop.
